Career and Experience Fair Connects Trent Durham Students with Potential Employers
Real-world networking delivers valuable experience and job-seeking advantage straight to Trent Durham
Preparation meets opportunity. At the annual Career and Experience Fair, employers from police services, the Canadian Armed Forces, banks, healthcare, social services, local government, and more came to Trent’s Durham GTA campus to engage with and recruit students hailing from an equally diverse range of disciplines.
Lorna MacKinlay, a student in her final year studying Sociology and Child and Youth Studies, came to the event with resumes in hand in search of a job.
“I’m keeping up the momentum and networking to get to know what’s in my community and who’s hiring,” stated Ms. MacKinlay. “Trent students should definitely take advantage of having this available in one place, especially potential employers who are interested in having new grads come and work for their organization. New grads bring a lot of fresh perspectives and new ideas. That really resonates with the agencies who are here."
At the fair, students came to discover opportunities for volunteer work or internships in order to gain crucial experience to enhance their academic learning or land a future job. Others sought part-time or full-time employment. Thanks to these networking events hosted by the University, the next big step could be just a friendly conversation away.
Speaking of the fair, Tyrell Williams, a first-year Business Administration and Media Studies student, said: “I learned a lot of good tips and discovered a lot of internship and volunteer opportunities.”
Employers also benefit from the Career Fair experience, learning first-hand the benefits of hiring Trent students. “We always like engaging with the up-and-coming generation of the workforce,” stated Heather Bulman, marketing and communications manager for the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. “We keep coming back every year. It’s great.”
