Finding a Meaningful Career After Graduation for Business Joint Major
Jordyn McCormack uses her experiences from Trent Durham GTA to make strong career moves following graduation
During her time as a student at Trent Durham GTA, Jordyn McCormack could always be found on campus. Whether it was working in the recruitment office, studying in the library with friends, or attending campus events, Ms. McCormack thrived in the Trent environment.
Shortly after graduating with a joint major in Business and History in 2016, Ms. McCormack began working as an administrative assistant for The Shandex Group, a local distribution company in the City of Pickering. Getting her foot in the door helped her get to know the company better, knowing the ins-and-outs of operations and getting to see the overall picture of the company’s reach. She made connections in many departments and ultimately landed the position of Sales Coordinator.
“One of the things I enjoy the most about where I am now is being a part of such a family oriented company because we’re all so tight knit,” says Ms. McCormack. “Since you know everyone, and are able to communicate with all levels throughout the company, you end up getting to see and understand the whole 360 process of how things operate in our industry that you would never been able to at a larger organization.”
Her experiences at Trent were invaluable to her current success. From making great connections, to acquiring sales skills while working with recruitment, to feeling prepared to ask questions, Ms. McCormack is using these skills to excel in her field.
She advises current students, who are looking ahead to the job market, to always be open to new and interesting opportunities even if they’re not something they’ve been working toward as part of their studies.
“This allows you to gain new learning experiences not only about industries and people, but yourself as well,” she says. “Growing both professionally and personally is never a bad thing and is valued in all aspects of life.”
