Building a Brand in 24 Hours: Trent Youth Entrepreneurship Society Hosts Intensive Event
Students tasked with creating and launching successful brand in one-day event
They’ve got 24 hours to make as much money as possible.
From 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9, to 9 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, local entrepreneurs aged 18-29, in groups of three, will compete to see who can make the most profit from a new brand they’ve just built.
Build-A-Brand is a 24-hour intensive event at the Innovation Cluster hosted by the Trent Youth Entrepreneurship Society (TYES).
“We wanted to challenge young entrepreneurs with a task that is accomplishable – building a brand in 24 hours and creating a profit from said brand. We want them to realize their potential,” said Matt Thompson, president of the TYES and fourth-year Business Administration student, specializing in Entrepreneurship. “Starting a business is a lot of work, but we want to show people who are considering it, that it’s possible to start getting sales in less than 24 hours.
“Consumers tend to buy products from people and brands they believe in, so in 24 hours competitors must create a trustworthy brand that inspires community. That’s not an easy task, but it is definitely possible.”
Mr. Thompson transferred to Trent in 2014 to switch his focus to business, be closer to family, and for the smaller class sizes. He got involved with the TYES after attending an event he saw on Facebook being hosted by FastStart.
“I was ecstatic about meeting people my age with a similar passion for entrepreneurship and I barely slept the night prior. I attended many more events hosted by the same group and was approached by the previous TYES president and asked to become the VP of marketing. I promptly accepted the offer and started hustling. Now I am the president,” he explains.
The Build-A-Brand event will help students gain confidence, he says. “It also means students have a business that can continue to produce income while studying at Trent – and it helps them create connections with community leaders and their peers.”
