Trent Launches Canada's First Course-Based Master of Science in Forensic Science
New graduate program features placements with OPP, RCMP, the Centre of Forensic Science and Canada Border Services
Trent University will offer Canada’s first course-based Master of Forensic Science (M.Sc.F.S.), starting in September 2018 as scientific and judicial officials around the world call for robust forensic science expertise.
A highlight of the new M.Sc.F.S. is a uniquely advantageous four-month forensic placement where students will be paired with partner organizations such as the OPP, RCMP, the Centre of Forensic Science or Canada Border Services to gain real-world experience as they build their professional networks.
“This new program will prepare our students to face challenges in the field today,” says Dr. Christopher Kyle, interim director of the Forensic Science program at Trent. “The goal for our graduates is to have them become practitioners who can combine critical thinking and problem solving within the context of a complex system – crime scene, lab and law. The M.Sc.F.S. will offer practical research skills that are not necessarily acquired in the academic or pure research environment.”
Building on Trent’s internationally-recognized leadership in the field, including the renowned Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science and faculty expertise in law, bloodstain pattern analysis, and DNA techniques and applications, the new master’s program will feature a range of courses, including: Communication Science and Forensic Reporting; Advanced Forensic DNA Typing; and Advanced Forensic Toxicology. These courses will bring experts working in the field to campus to discuss their work and research directly with students. The program will also feature a course called Complex Crime Scene Analysis where students will use Trent’s unique on-campus Crime Scene House to stage and process crimes with instruction CSI experts.
The new one-year M.Sc.F.S. launching September 2018 will prepare graduates for careers in law enforcement, forensic laboratories, coroner’s offices, border services, inspection agencies, private testing labs and more.
Applications for the program are being accepted until March 1, 2018. Learn more about the new Master of Science in Forensic Science program at Trent.
