Trent Excalibur Rowers Beat the Heat at Row Ontario Championships
Excalibur rowing takes home medals at provincials
Members of the Trent Excalibur Varsity Rowing program put on an impressive performance this past weekend at the Row Ontario Championships. Athletes gathered in Welland to compete for provincial titles, and the two-day regatta ended with Exalibur rowers and members of the Peterborough Rowing Club (PRC) taking multiple podium finishes against athletes from Ontario and the United States.
In the under-23 events, notable finishes included two gold medals, one silver medal and a bronze medal. Excalibur rowers Anders Fish and Dayton Kelly accounted for the two golds; the first in the U23 lightweight men’s four, and the second a dominant performance in the U23 lightweight men’s doubles that saw them finish over 17 seconds ahead of second place. Mr. Fish and Mr. Kelly also beat out the third place St. Catherine’s Rowing Club by 1.3 seconds to take the silver with PRC teammates Matt and Sam Lapum in the Senior Light Quad.
In the U23 women’s 4x, former Trent athlete Claire Lapum, and current athletes Lauren Temperley, Noemi Marcoux, and Jessica Lenters placed second behind the Ottawa Rowing Club.
Daniel Bullock made his senior competitive debuts with Trent teammates James Dyer and Matthew Seaby as well as Charles Murphy of the Peterborough Rowing Club (PRC). The open men’s quadruple sculls cruised to a gold medal finish by 15 seconds over the rest of the field. Mr. Dyer and Mr. Seaby also placed third in the men’s double.
The U23 men’s quad finished third with Trent athletes Daniel Bullock, Matthew Hagopian, Mark Moyer, PRC athlete Charles Murphy taking home the bronze. In one of the final events of the regatta Daniel Bullock added to his medal count with a first place finish in the U21 elite men’s single, beating out competition exclusive to those who will be eligible to compete for spots on team Ontario’s Canada Summer Games team in 2017.
The PRC will be gearing up for its final regatta of the summer competitive season, the Canadian Henley.
“There is now a week to get ready for the Canadian Henley where the crews will meet the best from across the country and the States,” said Jack Lapum, head coach of both Trent Excalibur rowing and PRC. The weeklong regatta will see crews from all over North America and overseas compete for Henley Gold.
