Trent President and Alumni Highlighted Among Peterborough's Most Influential People
President Groarke ranks third in annual top 20 list from Metroland’s Peterborough This Week
Highlighting the important relationship Trent University shares with the Peterborough community, Trent president and vice-chancellor Dr. Leo Groarke and several other local influencers with Trent University connections are climbing the ranks among Peterborough’s most influential people.
The 2016 Most Influential list, compiled by Peterborough This Week, part of the Metroland Media Group, ranks the 20 most influential people in the region who, through their words and actions, affect the character, development and behaviour of the Peterborough community.
President Groarke ranked third among the top 20 influencers and is recognized for his “accelerated plans to change the landscape and the institution’s reputation in the community,” and also for his push “for the development of a business research park and recreation facilities via partnerships with the City.”
The 2016 list also includes three Trent alumni: The Honourable Maryam Monsef ’03; Peterborough, MPP Jeff Leal ’74, and Joe McGillis ’97. Others with Trent connections include: Dr. Jenny Ingram, a member of the Trent Centre for Aging & Society; Sofie Andreou, a lecturer at Trent; and Michael Skinner, past co-chair of the Trent Business Council and new President and CEO of the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster.
The many Trent connections in this year’s list point to the vital role the University plays within the community. Trent University and the City of Peterborough partnered to develop the new Trent Sports Fields complex, which was just opened, are collaborating on the development of the Trent Research and Innovation Park, and are working to bring more growth in sport and recreational facilities to the North end with a new arena complex.
