Five Trent Excalibur Rowers Named to Rowing Canada National Teams
Current and former Excalibur athletes to compete at World Rowing Championship as part of under-23 and senior national teams
Five current or past Trent University Excalibur varsity athletes will be representing Team Canada at this summer’s World Rowing Championship as part of the under-23 and senior national teams, taking place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from August 21 to 28, following an announcement made yesterday by Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA).
The Excalibur will be represented by current Trent varsity rowers Alex Watson, Trevor Jones, and Graham Peeters, as well as former members of the Excalibur rowing teams Joshua King, and Andrew Stewart-Jones. As it’s an Olympic year, the championship will include junior, under-23 and senior team athletes.
“What a great, great honour to represent Canada. To be able to represent Canada and Trent on this level is amazing,” said Mr. Watson, who is currently training at the national training centre in London, Ontario.
As a member of the under-23 team, Mr. Watson will row in the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, Mr. Jones will complete in the men’s double sculls, and Mr. Peeters, joins the men’s quadruple sculls. On the senior team, Mr. King will row in the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, and Mr. Stewart-Jones in the men’s coxed pair.
“These talented athletes are constantly training and show such incredible determination as they strive to achieve their goals,” said Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Athletics and Recreation at Trent University. “To have so many green and white Excalibur athletes competing on the world stage is a testament to the coaches and programs available through Trent and our partnership with Row Ontario and the Row to Podium program.”
The team will be joined by Row to Podium coach Carol Love, who continues to mentor athletes that are training with the Excalibur, and who has proven vital in continuing the growth of high-performance athletes at Trent.
This announcement comes on the heels of the Trent students Trevor Jones and Graham Peeters selection to represent Team Canada at the September championship in Poland in the men’s double skulls.
