$50,000 Raised at 12th Annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament in Support of Trent Varsity Athletes
Annual fundraiser helps grow varsity athlete scholarship program
Golfers, sponsors, varsity athletes, and coaches came together for a day of golf and celebration, helping to raise $50,000, all in support of Trent University’s varsity athletes, at the 12th annual President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament at the Peterborough Golf & Country Club on Thursday, June 16, 2016.
“The tremendous support of the sponsors and golfers who participated in this year’s President’s Excalibur Golf Tournament will help us to provide an outstanding academic, and athletic experience for our student-athletes at Trent University,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor at Trent University, who attended the event to greet golfers and thank them for their generous support of varsity student-athletes at Trent. “I would like to thank all of our sponsors and guests who supported this year’s event, enabling Trent to recruit and retain the best and brightest student-athletes.”
All proceeds from the annual tournament go towards supporting the varsity Green & White Athletic Scholarships for exceptional first-year student-athletes at Trent University.
The tournament was attended by members of the Trent Board of Governors, University senior administrators, and a number of business leaders from the community. It was hosted in partnership with new title sponsor Ameresco, a leading independent provider of comprehensive services, energy efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, asset sustainability and renewable energy solutions for facilities throughout North America. Trent recently partnered with Ameresco on a major energy consumption and infrastructure improvement project.
“The support and sponsorship of an industry leader like Ameresco sends a powerful message about the importance of our varsity sport program and we are so pleased that they have become a great champion of our varsity student-athletes,” said Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Athletics and Recreation for Trent University. She added: “We would also like to recognize President Groarke’s tremendous support of varsity athletics at Trent, which have made a positive impact on the success of this year’s tournament and, most importantly, the overall growth of athletics programs at Trent.”
Emceeing the day was varsity men’s volleyball athlete, Griffin Williams. Mr. Williams, a fourth year Environmental Studies student at Trent University, is excelling at Trent, and continually demonstrates academic excellence and exceptional leadership. The keynote guest speaker for the evening was Abby Adair, a third year student completing a joint major in Math and Chemistry at Trent. Ms. Adair has been a varsity rower for three years and is the incoming president of Trent University Rowing Club. Ms. Adair addressed the crowd with great eloquence as she outlined her athletic achievements and discussed the power of sport. She also spoke passionately about her own volunteer commitment to rowing as both a coach of the high school rowing program and also as a leader in the the Row for Heart campaign.
The 2016 winning foursome title went to the team from tournament sponsors RainMaker including Michael O’Conner, John Leacy, Jeff O’Conner, David Koskie. Other winners, included Closest-to-the-Pin: Eric Norkus & Jackie Muldoon and Longest Drive winners Mike Belsey & Nancy Marcotte.
Congratulations and thanks go out to everyone who participated, with special appreciation to the many generous sponsors who helped make this year’s event such a success.
