Student Profile: Betelhem Wondimu - Envisioning policies for economic empowerment
International Development Studies & Economics Student ~ Microdata Analyzer ~ International Recruitment Assistant ~ Alumni Award Recipient
With a passion for development and economic empowerment, fourth year economics student Betelhem Wondimu hopes to one day work in policy development.
Betelhem discovered that the international development studies and economics classes she enrolled in gave her “the best of both worlds.” Wondimu says, “International development gave me the critical analyses of development theories and how they are practiced in the real world while economics provided an understanding of how economic theories are practiced in mathematical terms such as GDP and national gross income.”
Currently, a fourth year economics course is allowing Betelhem to ground the theories she’s learned by taking micro-data and creating statistics on a research topic that will ultimately turn into her research paper. This is meaningful for Betelhem as the process takes the knowledge she’s gained at Trent and applies it into one research paper.
“Trent has helped me create an identity for myself and helped me figure out where I want to go in the future and who I want to be. It truly is a place where the world comes to live and just being a part of that, I think has just transformed how I perceive my degree and how I perceive different aspects of my life and how I can pull different aspects from all of the things that I’ve learned and apply it to the real world.”
