With the deadline for secondary school students to accept their offer of admission quickly approaching, Trent University welcomed students to ask questions, take in a lecture and discover what Trent University has to offer on both the Peterborough and Durham campuses, with the Discover Day events.

“The goal of Discover Day is to provide students with additional opportunities to come to campus to experience our personal and collaborative atmosphere, outside of the traditional and larger-scale open houses,” noted Tawny Weese, enrollment advisor in Durham.

Both campuses offered lectures in various disciplines, where faculty discussed what students would be learning in a given field, in addition to info sessions on the transition from high school to university and on financial planning. Students could also take a tour of either campus and had an opportunity to see residence rooms in Peterborough. With faculty, staff and current students on hand, students and their families had a unique opportunity to speak about their concerns or ask questions about Trent and entering their first year of university.

Having small group tours and intimate conversations with faculty you could tell made a large impact on the decision making process,” said  Scott Maufront, a third year Business Administration and International Political Economy student who was one of the students volunteering at Discover Day in Peterborough. “The families who attended seemed very grateful for the program specific-nature of the Discover Day. Be it arts or science, families enjoyed seeing amenities specific to that field of study.”

In Durham, English professor Dr. Joel Baetz presented to students interested in humanities and offered up some advice about the difficult decision of choosing a university, drawing on his own experience and helping to ease any last minute nerves.

“When I was picking a university – I was really terrified of making the wrong choice, but I quickly realized there only good options available when you choose to go to a university, for me especially in the humanities,” he said.

The Discover Day events on the Peterborough and Durham campuses are a perfect example of how Trent University promotes a strong sense of community and creates opportunities for students to build relationships, ask questions and work directly with faculty, staff and other students.
