Theory and practice occur simultaneously in the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing. Starting in first year, students have the opportunity to develop real-world work experience and skills through lectures, case studies and simulation labs. By the final year of study, students also enjoy unparalleled opportunity to practice nursing in a range of hospitals and community settings.
In celebration of National Nursing Week, and in keeping with Trent’s commitment to educating and inspiring the next generation of nurses, staff and faculty from the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing will spend the week visiting regional hospitals, meeting with staff and administrators, as part of ongoing partnerships to prepare students for success through clinical practice.
“Our plan in each facility is slightly different,” explains Dr. Cyndi Gilmer, who is leading the visits to three hospital partners, including the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay and Northumberland Hills Hospital. “Specifically we want to thank those who act as preceptors, the nurses who take our fourth year students and help guide them on a one-to-one basis through the last two semesters of their program. They support them as they work side-by-side and learn how to work independently. This is really key experience as young nurses make the transition to independent practitioners. Students work in these facilities for 300 hours in each of their last two terms. The get very valuable experience in the "real world.”
“We are pleased to stop and say thank you to our nursing partners during National Nursing Week Celebrations,” Dr. Gilmer added. “They work hard all year to guide and socialize our students into the profession. They act as role models for our students, demonstrating excellence in clinical practice. These clinical learning experiences are key to building and developing the profession of nursing.”
