As a specialist in global and comparative politics, Dr. Feyzi Baban, a professor of International Development Studies and Political Studies at Trent University, was called upon to provide expert commentary on the current position of Turkey in the Middle East on a recent episode of TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin.

The Agenda with Steve Paikin is TVO’s flagship current affairs program. It engages public-minded individuals in current affairs and social issues in an absorbing and insightful manner. The topic of the April 16 episode was “Turkey Between East and West” an exploration into how Turkey managed to connect Western democratic rules with respect for the religious habits of its Muslim majority. Professor Baban spoke to the erosion of secular democracy in Turkey and the current place of Turkey in the Middle East.

Professor Baban is currently working on a research project investigating the impact of Turkey’s membership on how European identity is defined and the implications of this for the EU project. His areas of expertise include the Middle East and the European Union.
