From its humble beginnings in 1974 when courses were offered out of Eastdale Collegiate and Vocational Institute to the opening of a dedicated new campus on Thornton Road in 2010, Trent University Durham is, this year, celebrating a 40 year history of granting degrees in the Region.

To mark the milestone anniversary, a number of events and initiatives are planned, including a celebration at Trent University Durham that took place on April 10 and a special insert in the new issue of Trent Magazine, which showcases a timeline of milestones for the Durham campus, profiles of alumni, faculty reflections, and thoughts from Trent University Durham head Joe Muldoon on the exciting future that lies ahead for the campus.

“You can’t help but feel hopeful,” Mr. Muldoon says about the future of Trent University Durham. “There is growth in the GTA—many new Canadians in the GTA—it is one of the few areas where the number of students is increasing. So we are strategically positioned there.”

Highlights from the insert in Trent Magazine include:

• Timeline of milestones over Trent University Durham’s 40 years in the Region – from 1989 when Trent moved into Durham College and 2008 when Trent opened its first dedicated space in the Simcoe Building, to 2010 when the new campus opened and new programs launched and present day with our name change from Trent University Oshawa to Trent University Durham
• 18 profiles of alumni, sharing their Trent University Durham memories, including Leon Presner ’95, a police constable with the Regional Municipality of Durham for the past 24 years, who enrolled in his first course in 1995 and graduated with a joint sociology/computer studies degree just last year; Simone Barnard ’04 who was inspired to return to school at Trent University Durham because of her daughter and now, after graduating with a B.A. in History, successfully runs her own business and is working towards a master’s degree in clinical counseling; Barbara Sheridan ’02, who completed a degree in Psychology at Trent University Durham and credits her professors and experience at Trent for inspiring her to become a kindergarten teacher; and more.
