Trent University Honours Top Athletes at 47th Annual Athletic Awards Ceremony

Trent University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation celebrated student athletic achievement at the 47th annual Athletic Awards Ceremony, held in the Trent Athletics Centre gymnasium last night.

Varsity athletes Gwynne Carlos and Christopher Cookson were awarded the Arthur Cup, the University’s most prestigious award for graduating students who have demonstrated outstanding contribution, sportsmanship, participation, and leadership in the athletic programs.

Gwynne Carlos (Barrie, ON) has a remarkable list of accomplishments in competition and in the community. This year she will be graduating from Trent after a four seasons as a member of the women’s varsity rugby program. This young woman has distinguished herself on and off the field in her time at Trent. As a member of Excalibur women’s rugby team, Ms. Carlos has been able to involve herself in the Trent community and grown into a leadership role on the team as assistant captain. Her commitment to her sport of rugby didn’t stop her from being a large contributor to the campus rec department, not only as an athlete, but as a leader, and outstanding convenor.

Tanner Cookson (St. Catharines, ON) has been a longstanding member of the Trent Men’s Rowing team. This past year Mr. Cookson secured a gold medal at Brock Invitational Regatta, a silver medal in OUA competition, and a bronze medal at Canadian University Rowing Championship alongside team-mate Joshua King in the lightweight men’s double sculls event. Among his other numerous achievements in the sport of rowing some outstanding points include: named to Rowing Canada’s male sweep crew of the year in 2014; designated as the recipient of the Julianna Stonehouse Award for Otonabee College (for distinguished athleticism in the sport of rowing); winner of multiple Canadian Henley titles; and being an avid participant of the recreational hockey league at Trent. This summer Mr. Cookston will be taking his talents off the water as he and longtime friend Daniel Corso embark on a cycling trip across Canada to raise awareness for Lyme disease.

Another prestigious award, the Gary Wolff Leadership Award, was presented to Alex Campagnolo, a varsity volleyball player from Guelph, Ontario. The award is presented each year to a student athlete who has demonstrated determination and leadership through balancing sport, community involvement and academic performance. This award was established by the Trent University Alumni Association in June 2002 to commemorate the service of Gary Wolff, chair of the Board of Governors from 1997 to 2002. Mr. Campagnolo has been an active leader on the Excalibur men’s volleyball team. In every year of his undergraduate degree Mr. Campagnolo has been the starting setter for the squad. His presence and character have greatly contributed to the growth of the program in his time at Trent. This man’s competitiveness, sense of humor, and athletic ability, are all part of what makes Mr. Campagnolo a deserving recipient of this award. He has also been active in the Peterborough community volunteering as a local u-16 girls’ volleyball coach, and has managed to balance his education alongside his other accomplishments. As a testament to his quality, Trent men’s volleyball will be happy to have Mr. Campagnolo return to the court next year as he continues his education in Environmental Sciences through Trent’s Masters of Sustainability Studies program.

This year Trent Athletics is also pleased to announce Trent Rowing as the recipient of the Community Betterment Award. From the organization of Head of the Trent festivities in the fall to the joint organization of Movember fundraising efforts alongside men’s rugby, Trent Rowing has demonstrated leadership at Trent. What sets Trent Rowing apart this year is the commitment demonstrated by many members of the team in the Row for Heart Fundraiser earlier this month. Under the leadership of Dylan Wing the team managed to raise over three thousand dollars for the Heart and Stoke Foundation of Canada. In addition, several members of the team completed 100 kilometre solo ergs as a part of the event.
