The research conducted by a Trent graduate student tracking and monitoring black bears in Algonquin Park was the focus of a new episode of Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel. Aired on March 3, the episode featured a segment on the winter field work conducted by the Algonquin Black Bear Project, of which Sarah Poole is a member as she works towards her M.Sc. in Environmental and Life Sciences at Trent University.

Ms. Poole’s graduate work is supervised by Dr. Jim Schaefer with Trent’s Biology department and Dr. Martyn Obbard with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, who started the Algonquin Black Bear Project in 2006 to determine if selective logging has an effect on black bear distribution and to monitor population dynamics in Algonquin Provincial Park. In her M.Sc. work, Ms. Poole is looking at black bear ecology and movement behaviour to improve the management of the population.

The Daily Planet episode showcased Dr. Obbard and his crew crawling into bear dens where they collect data on the body condition of their collared bears as well as any cubs and yearlings that the female bears may have. Recently, the nine year study ended and Dr. Obbard, Ms. Poole and the rest of the Algonquin Black Bear Project crew removed the GPS radio collars (used to track movement) that they had on black bears.
