Trent students and members of the local community were treated to an inside look at the federal political scene and the Prime Minister himself on February 3 when Paul Wells, author and political editor for Maclean’s magazine, delivered a dynamic public lecture.

“Paul Wells is one of the best journalists in the country. No one has a better sense of how the current federal government thinks and strategizes,” said Dr. Christopher Dummitt, chair of the Department of Canadian Studies, who coordinated the visit. “Having experts like Paul on campus and exposing our students and the community to people who matter is a vital part of what Trent does.”

For the first hour of his talk, Mr. Wells gave the audience an insider’s look at politics in Ottawa and his thoughts on Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Speaking of his experiences writing his popular book, The Longer I'm Prime Minister: Stephen Harper and Canada, released in 2006, Mr. Wells told the audience “Stephen Harper is the most hotly polarizing prime minister I have ever seen. I wanted to write the kind of book about Harper that will be written about him 30 years from now.”

Following his talk, Mr. Wells opened up a question and answer period with the audience, speaking on everything from his opinions on politicians to his experiences as a journalist covering the world’s most important news, including the recent Charlie Hebdo murders in Paris, France.
