Described as a “true agent of social change” and a student leader who not only organizes a variety of activities and events at Trent, but also “values empowering students” and ensures that they have “a voice on campus,” Boykin Smith, a third-year Political Studies student at Trent, is an obvious choice to be nominated for the prestigious 3M National Student Fellowship.

Mr. Smith currently serves as the vice-president, Campaigns and Equity with the Trent Central Student Association (TCSA), and has represented Trent University at the Canadian Federation of Students. Prior to coming to Trent, Mr. Smith was also heavily involved in a variety of leadership roles in the Bahamas, including serving as the junior minister of Tourism and moderating the 2012 National Youth Rally, a gathering of thousands of students from across the Bahamas.

The 3M National Student Fellowship is offered by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in partnership with 3M Canada. The fellowship honours up to ten full-time undergraduate college and undergraduate university students at Canadian institutions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their lives and at their college or university. These students embrace a vision of quality education that enhances their academic experience and the experience of those around them.

The 2015 fellowship cohort will be publicly announced in mid-March, 2015. More information about the fellowship can be found at http://www.stlhe.ca/awards/3m-national-student-fellowship/.

“The process for selecting Trent University’s nominee for the fellowship was quite intensive, including nominations received from individuals and departments at Trent, and an in-depth interview process with short-listed candidates,” said Adam Guzkowski, teaching awards coordinator with the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Trent. “Special thanks to those involved in recommending potential nominees, and to those who supported Boykin’s nomination through generously providing their time and expertise.”
