Student leaders at the Trent-Fleming School of Nursing are proud to be hosting the 2014 Canadian Nursing Students Association (CNSA) Ontario Regional Conference at Trent University from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26, 2014.

Meaghan Gutenberg and Melissa Zubrickas are the co-directors of the Trent-Fleming chapter of the CNSA, which is the national voice of Canadian nursing students and is actively dedicated to the positive promotion of nurses and the nursing profession as a whole. The conference will welcome hundreds of nursing students from across Ontario to Trent’s campus in Peterborough to learn about the educational, professional, legal and ethical aspects of nursing.

"This is the Trent-Fleming chapter's first time hosting the Ontario regional conference, and the timing could not be more perfect with this year being Trent University's 50th anniversary,” said Ms. Gutenberg, a third-year student in the collaborative BScN program. “I am so proud and passionate about what conferences like this are able to do for nursing students. They have certainly changed my life and I could not be more excited to help bring this incredible opportunity to Peterborough.”

Each year, the CNSA hosts regional and national conferences for nursing students across Canada. The events bring together students from different backgrounds, nursing schools and locations to network, socialize, and learn about many different avenues of nursing. The conference hosted at Trent will offer three simulations, which include the unresponsive patient, labour and delivery, and spot the hazards. Student attendees will also have the opportunity to hear speakers from across Ontario on topics including the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) registration exam, social media in nursing, smoking cessation, assisting new registered nurses, caring for children with autism, and more.

"I am excited to be a part of the planning process for the CNSA Ontario Regional Conference and hope that many Trent nursing students take advantage of the amazing opportunity for networking and learning outside the usual classroom setting,” said Ms. Zubrickas, a second-year student in the compressed nursing program and a graduate of Trent’s Business Administration program. “I look forward to welcoming nursing students from across Ontario to Trent and hope that they can enjoy Trent as much as I have over the last five years.”

The theme of this year’s Ontario regional conference is Reach For The Stars: Go Where No Nurse Has Gone Before!, with sub-themes of leadership, advocacy, pride, and creative themes of super heroes and space. These concepts reflect nurses’ role as the “superheroes” of health care, taking on leadership roles and advocating for patients, and will be incorporated into the various workshops, social events and keynote speeches being offered to attendees.
