On Monday, May 26, 2014 researchers from the Psychology Departments at Trent University and Western University held a full-day research forum exploring new directions and cross-cultural perspectives in the study of emotions, health, and well being. Participants included undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty from both universities, as well as visiting international scholars from the University of Bologna (Italy) and Al‐Farabi University (Kazakhstan).

The Forum included presentations and roundtable discussions on a range of “hot” topics in contemporary psychological science, including: emotional intelligence, resiliency, intercultural sensitivity, intimate relationships, perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Internet addiction.

Featured talks included:

  • “Does mother know best? Unpacking mother-child discrepancies in the assessment of emotional intelligence” by Dr. Kateryna Keefer of Western University;
  • “Core dimensions in OCD: Thoughts in light of DSM-5” by Dr. Laura Summerfeldt of Trent University;
  • “Measuring resiliency in children and adults” by Dr. Donald Saklofske of Western University;
  • “Emotional intelligence 2.0: Revisiting conceptual models” by Dr. James Parker of Trent University;
  • “Problematic internet use: Specific or generalized addiction?” by Dr.  Robyn Taylor of Guelph University;
  • “Are perfectionistic strivings adaptive, maladaptive or benign?” by Martin Smith of Western University;
  • “Beyond the enthusiasm: Knowns and Unknowns about the trait emotional intelligence -- health link” by Federica Andrei of the University of Bologna (Italy);
  • “Exploring the connection between mothers’ and children’s emotional intelligence in Canada and Kazakhstan” by Yelnura Autalipova of Al-Farabi University (Kazakhstan).

The forum was hosted at Trent University by the Emotion and Health Research Laboratory (EHRL). The EHRL, under the direction of Psychology professor Dr. James D. A. Parker, brings together researchers interested in studying the nature and development of emotional and social competencies across the lifespan, as well as the associations between these competencies and health and well being.

The EHRL activities have been supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Canada Research Chair (CRC) program, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre, and the Premier's Research Excellence Award (PREA).
