Trent Chancellor Don Tapscott Supports Value of Arts and Science Degrees in Toronto Star Article

The Toronto Star published an editorial by Trent University chancellor Don Tapscott on Wednesday, May 14. He writes in support of the value of liberal arts and science degrees, saying that skills developed in arts and humanities degrees such as critical thinking, citizenship, and innovation are crucial to students’ future employment.

Mr. Tapscott has been a champion of the broader skills and abilities developed through university education, participating in a debate on CBC’s The Current recently. As a Trent alumnus, he has shared his personal experiences from his time as a Psychology student, including the 2014 Alumni Awards, where his closing remarks for the evening stated that “Trent University exists to inspire and equip the next generation – individually and collectively – with the passion, confidence, skills and intellectual rigour to advance their communities and the world.”

Mr. Tapscott is one of the world’s leading authorities on innovation, media, and the economic and social impact of technology and advises business and government leaders around the world. Over 30 years he has introduced many ground-breaking concepts that are part of contemporary understanding. He holds an Honours B.Sc. in Psychology from Trent University and earned an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Trent in 2006.

As part of Trent University’s 50th Anniversary Kick-Off Weekend Aug 7-10, Mr. Tapscott will give the Opening Keynote Address for the Ideas That Change The World Symposium, entitled "Rethinking Civilization: Five Modest Proposals for a World that Needs Changing".
