Trent University’s Department of Athletics and Recreation celebrated student athletic achievement at the 45th annual Athletic Awards Ceremony, held in the Gym at the Trent Athletics Centre on Tuesday night.
Varsity rowers David Mungham and Danielle Goodwin were awarded the Arthur Cup, the University’s most prestigious award for graduating students who have demonstrated outstanding contribution, sportsmanship, participation, and leadership in the athletic programs.
Danielle Goodwin (Whitby, ON) has a remarkable list of accomplishments in competition and in the community. This third-year rower placed third in the Women’s Doubles at Head of the Trent in 2013, and has had a successful rowing career competing in many championships. This young woman was elected President of the Trent University Rowing club this season and in this role has lead the organization of the Head of the Trent. She has also worked in partnership with other varsity athletes and teams for the Movember Auction and Trent Food Drive. Danielle regularly volunteers with the Peterborough Rowing Club’s Adaptive Rowing program. Outside of varsity sport, Danielle has remained active participating in many Campus Recreation programs and in 2011 won the Otonabee College Female Athlete of the year.
Peterborough, Ont.’s David Mungham has dedicated himself to rowing and taken on a critical leadership role with his team this season. As one of the most decorated medalist’s in Trent’s Rowing program, David has won two Bronze medals at the OUAs, and received top honours at the Dad-Vail Regatta, Henley Regatta, and competed at the CIS National Championships. David has also been actively engaged with the Trent Rowing Executive as Treasure and is a regular participant in the Campus Recreation Intramural Hockey program. He is described by teammates as selflessly dedicated to the sport, and has been instrumental in keeping their training program on track in the off-season.
Another prestigious award, the Gary Wolff Leadership Award, was presented to Brad Keizerwaard, a varsity volleyball player from Sharon, Ontario. The award is presented each year to a student athlete who has demonstrated determination and leadership through balancing sport, community involvement and academic performance. This award was established by the Trent University Alumni Association in June 2002 to commemorate the service of Gary Wolff, chair of the Board of Governors from 1997 to 2002. Brad has been an active leader in the Trent community, and is cited by many teammates as the reason for their academic success. He has also been active in the Peterborough community volunteering with the Big Brothers In-School Mentoring Program where he makes weekly visits to support his little brother.
In addition, the following students were honoured with the University Athletic Award, presented to third- and fourth-year students who have demonstrated a significant contribution to the varsity and campus recreation programs:
Christian Zimmer – Ingleside, ON
Christian is a leader on and off the court. Currently in his third year of Biology, he embodies the definition of excellence in sport and academics. Christian was Men’s Volleyball team captain this year, and has played a key role in welcoming new athletes to the team as well as supporting the recruiting program.
Cody Jackson – Guelph, ON
As a student coach with the Varsity Rowing program, Cody has dedicated himself to supporting the rowing team and working closely to develop the novice women’s team. Currently in his fourth year of Environmental Science, Cody also volunteers regularly at community and rowing events including the Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Sarah Rothwell – Listowell, ON
Sarah is an avid rower in her third year of Nursing at Trent University. She has dedicated countless hours to Varsity Rowing and has competed in the National Rowing Champions as well as the Ontario University Athletics (OUAs). She is described by teammates as an inspiration, keeping energy and spirits high.
Samantha Belsey – Norwood, ON
Sam played a key role in helping the Women’s Volleyball program secure their first medal this year. Currently enrolled in her fourth year of Biology, Sam has volunteered with many varsity fundraising initiatives including the Excalibur Golf Tournament. Sam was named to the East Division Second-Team All-Star at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association awards in February.
Gillian Ferguson-Martin – Winnipeg, MB
Gillian has dedicated herself to the Women’s Volleyball program on and off the court. After being sidelined in her final year with an injury, Gillian took on an active role in supporting the varsity program in many ways including event support, fundraising and photography. She is currently finishing her fifth year of Environmental Studies.
Rory Lepage – Whitefish, ON
Rory is an outstanding athlete and leader, succeeding in both Rowing competitions and academics. He has been active on the Trent Rowing Club executive since 2012 and played a key role in the planning and success of Head of the Trent. Rory has also played on the Trent Men’s Extramural Hockey team for three years, and recently won a silver at the Challenge Cup Tournament.
Adam Majid – Ottawa, ON
Adam has been MVP and Captain of the Men’s Soccer program, as well as regularly competing in the Campus Recreation Basketball league. Dedicated to success on the field and academically, he is completing his fourth year in Forensic Science. Adam has been an active volunteer in the community and twice named to East Division All-Star Team.
Bailey McInroy – Thorton, ON
Bailey has played an active role with the Trent Rowing program on and off the water. Currently in her third year of Biology, Bailey has been active on the Trent Rowing Executive and has played an active role in the success of Head of the Trent.
