$1 Million in Funding Announced for Two Canada Research Chairs at Trent University

Five-year funding for new Feminist and Gender Studies chair and renewed Aquatic Sciences and Biogeochemistry chair

Dr. May Chazan and Dr. Celine Gueguen, two Trent University professors have been named Canada research chairs (CRC) in an official announcement made Friday, March 15, 2013 by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, minister of State (Science and Technology).

Dr. May Chazan has been newly appointed Trent’s CRC in Feminist and Gender Studies, and Dr. Celine Gueguen was renewed for a second, five-year term as Trent’s CRC in Aquatic Sciences and Biogeochemistry.

“Trent University hosts a significant number of Canada research chairs for a University of its size and has a strong reputation for research productivity,” said Dr. Neil Emery, vice-president Research & International. “Trent welcomes this announcement of two significant Canada research chairs in Feminist and Gender Studies and in Aquatic Sciences and Biogeochemistry.”

New Canada Research Chair in Feminist and Gender Studies
As the new Canada Research Chair in Feminist and Gender Studies, Professor Chazan will receive $500,000 over five years for research that will investigate why and how older women in different contexts are organizing and networking in global justice movements, to provide critical insights into contemporary struggles for social change.

“This research will ultimately shift attention beyond the challenges associated with old age to the many contributions older women make in working for change,” said Prof. May, whose interdisciplinary work promises significant connection with Canadian Studies, Indigenous Studies and international studies at Trent University.

Renewed Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Sciences and Biogeochemistry
As the renewed Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Sciences and Biogeochemistry, Professor Gueguen will receive $500,000 over five years to continue her research in the area of the aquatic environment, in an innovative program that will yield a comprehensive understanding of the fate and mobility of metals and of the impact of environmental constraints on pollutant pathways.

“The results of this research program will provide a more reliable tool to risk assessors for the prediction of environmental change and anthropogenic impact,” said Prof. Gueguen, whose program will bridge laboratory experiments and in situ observations.

About Canada Research Chairs
The Canada Research Chairs program invests approximately $300 million per year toward research in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities and social sciences. The CRC program has positioned Canada as an international leader and destination of choice in research and development. In total, the Government of Canada will provide $90.6 million in support to 120 newly awarded and renewed Canada Research Chairs. The research, which will be conducted at 39 Canadian institutions, has potential benefits for Canadians and their families, businesses, practitioners and policy-makers. Of this total, 19 researchers have been recruited from abroad, including 10 Canadians returning to work in their home country—demonstrating the success of the program in attracting and supporting research excellence in Canada.
