Principal of Gzowski College, Dr. Melanie Buddle was thrilled to personally congratulate students at the Peter Gzowski Student Awards on Wednesday October 19, 2012. "It gives me great pleasure to award our high achievers,” she said. “Many students have busy schedules with classes, part-time jobs, and other commitments. Managing busy lives while maintaining high grades is a real accomplishment and we are proud of their successes. Our annual awards ceremony is a chance to publicly acknowledge their excellence. We hope that other students are also inspired by these outstanding members of our Gzowski College community."

For Jordan Hurley, achieving academic excellence results from the opportunity to learn from wonderful professors and a beautiful campus that’s easy to get around. “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Trent,” says Mr. Hurley, winner of the Peter Gzowski Part-Time Studies Award for outstanding achievement. Mr Hurley expressed the major impact that interacting closely with his professors had on his ability to succeed in many areas, not just academics. “I believe my experience here has prepared me for the next chapter of my life.”

Receiving the award for highest academic standing in his first year of study, Eamonn Corrigan chose Trent because of its class sizes. “My physics class has about 30 students in it. Trent gives you the opportunity to learn and engage with your professor in a way that no other university does.”

Recognized for top marks in the second year of study, Sarah G. Buttle says the professors at Trent have encouraged her to develop and pursue her own academic interests, while offering guidance and support. “I love the interdisciplinary nature of my program at Trent. I am completing joint majors in anthropology and biology, and the high degree of flexibility within my majors allows me to study a variety of engaging topics. I look forward to continuing my studies at a university with such strong commitment to academic excellence.”

Celebrating academic success is just as important as recognizing it, according to Dr. Raymond Dart, an associate professor and chair of the Business Administration Department. “We have some amazing students who are consistently achieving high marks. It’s important to congratulate them for their passion for learning.”

“It feels fantastic to be honoured and recognized for all the long hours I dedicate to school,” says Samantha Millette. Ms. Millette achieved the highest academic standing in the third year of study during 2011-12 “Eight months of non-stop studying and essay-writing isn't easy, but it is definitely worth it, especially when your hard work is recognized by others.”  A fourth-year student in the environmental studies program, Ms. Millette is keen on learning how environmental policy is formed and how environmental law can be used to protect the environment.”
