Trent University Oshawa Celebrates Convocation at the Thornton Road Campus

Students, faculty and staff gather with graduates and families to honour university accomplishments

The Trent University Oshawa community gathered together at the Thornton Road Campus on Friday, June 1, 2012 for a special dinner to celebrate the Oshawa graduating class prior to its ceremony that will place at the Peterborough Symons campus on Wednesday, June 6.

Acting associate dean of Trent University Oshawa, Dr. Brendan Hickie was the emcee for the evening and took special care to introduce each member of the well-regarded staff at Trent University Oshawa, all of whom received warm rounds of applause for their support of students throughout their Trent University careers.

Awards of appreciation were presented to graduating members of TOSA, the Trent Oshawa Student Association Executive team, including president Kelly VanLeyden, vice-president of Internal Affairs Phil Bailey and vice-president of Campus Life Sarah Gallen.

The Trent Oshawa Academic Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement went to Angela Hauke.

Trent Oshawa Peer Mentoring coordinator Nicolle Miller also received an award of appreciation from Oshawa senior tutor Craig Cameron, and Tara Lee Upshall was greeted with a standing ovation as she collected the Trent Oshawa Citizenship Award.
 
Special guest and president of the Oshawa Chapter of the Trent University Alumni Association, Laura Suchan was in attendance to present along with Trent alumni Bianca Bannister and Matt Geofroy Jan Rivett with the Trent University Alumni Recognition Award.

Dr. Steven E. Franklin, Trent University president and vice-chancellor addressed the crowd. “To our graduating students this evening, we are celebrating your accomplishments as a select group of individuals from the unique and very special -Trent U Oshawa Campus. This community has paid close attention to each of you while nurturing your education here …”

There were celebratory hoots and hollers as Dr. Franklin read out the stats of the graduating class: “Among the 125 graduates of Trent University Oshawa graduating this year, 69 are graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree, 13 with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree, 37 with a general Bachelor of Arts, five with a general Bachelor of Science and one with a Bachelor of Education.”

“I wish each of you congratulations on your successes so far and know that for Trent University graduates there will be many more to come.”
