Trent University’s Academic Plan to Senate in February

Academic Plan

Dr. Gary Boire, Provost and Vice-President (Academic), provided an update on the University’s draft academic plan, titled “Radical Recovery: An Academic Plan for Trent University (2012-2015).”  The plan was drafted by Trent’s Academic Planning Committee and outlines a map for the University’s future. 

The plan addresses the academic experience for students, the administrative supports required, the external relations environment and the research office. It also includes 63 specific recommendations to strengthen Trent’s overall positioning.

The revised draft plan was presented to the Board for information and will be submitted to the Academic Planning and Budget Committee (AP&B) for a final round of discussion.  The final version will be forwarded to Faculty Board on February 10 and to Senate for approval on February 14.

Update – Integrated Plan Implementation

President Franklin provided an update on the status of the implementation of Trent’s Integrated Plan, “Toward a Sustainable Future: The First Integrated Plan for Trent University (2010-2015). The plan, which was approved by the Senate in May 2011 and the Board in June 2011, identifies four institutional priorities: 

  • Commitment to Academic Excellence
  • Commitment to Strategic Enrolment Management
  • Commitment to Achievement of Financial Stability
  • Commitment to Strengthening Community Engagement

President’s Monthly Report – December 2011 - January 2012

Planning for Trent’s 50th anniversary continues with a series of meetings planned for February, 2012. The first of four buildings planned for the Water Street Residence is now under construction and will be ready for occupancy in September, 2012.  The new residence will be an excellent addition to the current housing options available to Trent students. Awareness building among students about the Province’s new 30% Ontario Tuition Grant continues into February. The deadline to submit applications for the tuition grant is March 31, 2012. 

Students who receive OSAP will be considered automatically for the grant. An on-line application is now open for all others to apply to at http://www.ontario.ca/30off, or by calling the Province’s Ontario Tuition Grant Hotline at 1-888-449-4478. Trent’s Annual Operating Budget (2012-13), as part of the three-to-five year Multiyear Budget Framework, is under preparation for presentation to the Board for approval in April.  Issues affecting the budget include enrolment projections, salary and operating expenses, estimates of pension liabilities, deferred maintenance, and provincial policies.

Trent-Fleming Partnership

Dr. Tony Tilly, President, Fleming College presented an update on “Fleming and Trent: Opportunities for the Future.” In his presentation, Dr. Tilly provided context for the provincial funding for education, Fleming’s strengths and challenges and an overview of the college’s key markets. The presentation also highlighted shared attributes between Trent and Fleming, and reviewed areas of future collaboration.

Enrolment Report

The January 20, 2012 enrolment report shows that:

•    Total undergraduate enrolment as of November 1, 2011 was 7,458 students. This is an overall increase of 41 students compared to November 1, 2010.

•    Domestic enrolment increased by 21 students, while international enrolment increased by 20 students.

Full-time enrolment increase by 147 students and part-time enrolment decreased by 106 students. More students are enrolling full-time than in the past.  Approximately 30 students change their status from part-time to fulltime every year.
