There is nothing quite like meeting someone who has been a source of inspiration in your life. This past July, three English Literature masters students from Trent had an incredible opportunity to do just that.  Sarah Milner, James Forrester, and Elizabeth Ramsay attended this year’s Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP) conference, where they were able to meet and speak with well known-scholars who have inspired their own academic endeavours.

SHARP’s annual conference brings together over three hundred scholars from around the world to share and discuss the latest research relating to book history, culture and media. This year’s event was held at the Longueuil Campus of the University of Sherbrooke, the Grande Bibliothèque of Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec and McGill University.

Trent’s strong representation at the conference impressed with presentations on their own work; Ms. Milner on “Frankenstein as Social Construct”, Mr. Forrester on “Charles Dickens comes to Lakefield: The Lakefield Literary Festival, 1995-2014″, and Ms. Ramsay with “Play as Product: The Marketing of Troilus and Cressida“. Sarah Milner won the award for “best poster,” and her work will be published in an upcoming issue of Studies in Book Culture, the journal of the Canadian Association for the Study of Book Culture (CASBC).

The Public Texts M.A. program at Trent University explores what it means to “go public” – to “publish” – and how that act resonates in the political, economic, and aesthetic spheres. To learn more about this collaborative program, visit http://www.trentu.ca/englishma/.
