“I’ll be representing the maple leaf this summer but plan to bleed green in the fall.” This is what Trevor Jones, member of the men’s national junior rowing team and incoming first-year student at Trent University from Lakefield, Ontario had to say at a send-off event for the rowing team held at Trent’s Athletics Centre on Wednesday, July 22, 2015.

“It means a lot as an athlete to have such support from the community. I’m excited to be attending Trent in the fall,” continued Mr. Jones.

Carol Love, former Olympian and coach of the men’s national junior team, also addressed the crowd today saying, “In all my years or experience with sport, it’s clear that a key to success is the amount of support our athletes receive. Today’s event is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with that support.”

The team, who has been training at Trent’s facilities, will represent Canada in Rio de Janeiro at the World Rowing Junior Championships August 5 -9, 2015.

The event also included special remarks from Mayor Daryl Bennett who spoke to the importance of sport in the community, Steven Pillar, vice-president of Finance and Administration at Trent University, who welcomed guests and introduced the team and Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Athletics and Recreation at Trent, who provided opening remarks. Campers attending the Mini Excalibur Camp at Trent cheered the athletes in and presented the team with good luck banners.
