Dr. Roberta Bondar Inspires Conference Delegates
May 5, 2007
Trent University chancellor Dr. Roberta Bondar presented a rousing keynote address as the opening speaker at the annual conference of the Association of Ontario University Human Resource Professionals (AOUHRP) on May 10.
In her address, Dr. Bondar drew extensively from her extraordinary career and spoke about what lessons she has learned from so many rich experiences. "We have to change ourselves on a continual basis so that we can be the best we can be," she said. Most importantly, she emphasized that align ing your personal and professional values is key to happiness. "It’ s also just as important to pass this along to others," she noted.
Dr. Bondar used the space analogy of escape velocity to explain the principle of human development through challenge and risk. Escape velocity refers to the required speed a rocket must travel to reach its orbiting altitude above the earth. "Just like the Space Shuttle, we have to move fast enough to get higher – it’s important to develop new skill sets quickly and learn how to mine your abilities."
Throughout her presentation Dr. Bondar made several important connections between her own professional development and the valuable work of the human resources field which was well received by the conference delegates. The 2007 AOUHRP conference, entitled "Exploring the Human Side of HR", runs at Trent until May 11.back
