Trent Alumnus Paul Schliesmann Wins Ontario Newspaper Award
April 4, 2007

Kingston Whig-Standard reporter and Trent alumnus Paul Schliesmann received the Del Bell Award for feature writing on April 21 at the annual Ontario Newspaper Awards event.

Mr. Schliesmann swept the feature-writing category for his three-part series "Tracy's Journey," chronicling his wife's struggle with breast cancer and the impact of her four-year battle on the entire Schliesmann family.

Paul Schliesmann (‘ 77) met his wife, Tracy Plunkett (’79), at Champlain College while both were attending Trent University. Mr. Schliesmann graduated with a BA in English and History, and Ms. Plunkett graduated in 1983 with an honours degree in English and French. Following their marriage and seven-month honeymoon in Europe, both returned to Trent in 1984 while Mr. Schliesmann completed his honours degree. Ms. Plunkett took a job in the Admissions Department recruiting students to Trent until 1985.

The judge for this award described "Tracy's Journey" as "a heartfelt work of love and epic beauty. Paul has done some of the finest writing I have seen in over 40 years as a journalist."

Schliesmann was also named one of three finalists for journalist of the year for 2006. This province-wide competition celebrates excellence in journalism.
