Trent University Extends Condolences to Families of Victims of Virginia Tech Shooting
April 4, 2007

Upon hearing the tragic news about today’s shooting incidents at Virginia Tech, Trent President Bonnie Patterson expressed her sympathies to the families of the victims.

“This horrific shooting of 32 people reminds us how precious life is and how violent elements remain within our society,” said Patterson. “While these incidents remain isolated events, they touch the lives of individuals who study and work on education campuses across Canada and throughout the world.”

The President stressed that institutions such as universities must always maintain a fine balance between maintaining an open environment, and providing a safe learning environment for students and employees. “Our university environment at Trent is special and unique. We must continue to strive to find the right balance between maintaining a safe and secure campus against the need to be an open and accessible institution.”

In memory of the victims of the shooting at Virginia Tech, the flag atop the Bata Library has been lowered to the half-mast position.
