Trent’s Taekwondo Team Captures Eight Trophies in Inaugural University League Competition
Universities from across the province gathered in Kingston on March 25 to compete in the first-ever Ontario University Taekwondo Competition League tournament. Leading the effort to establish varsity-level taekwondo in Ontario, Trent joined Queen’s, the University of Toronto and host Royal Military College in sending competitors to this foundational event.
"The hope is to get a few more schools each time such an event is held as McMaster and Western both have recreational taekwondo clubs but were unable to attend this event," explained Doug Johnson, Trent’s head taekwondo instructor.
In total, 30 athletes representing these four schools participated, and Trent c oaches Doug Johnson and Heather Macdonald assisted with judging and officiating during the competition as well.
The Trent Taekwondo Club sent two teams and one individual. The women's team consisted of Crystal Provencal, Meghann Solakis and Elizabeth Thipphawong. The men's team consisted of Feng Guo and Truong Tran. Jamie Zimmerman was Trent’s only black belt and competed in a division by herself.
Trent athletes experienced a great deal of success on the mats. The women's team came in second place behind the RMC team while the men's team came in fourth in sparring. In poomse (patterns) however, Trent cleaned up taking three out of four medals (first, second and a third place position). Miss Zimmerman took third in black belt forms and second in black belt sparring. In total, six competitors earned eight trophies at the event.
Trent’s Director of Athletics, Bill Byrick was extremely pleased with the performance of Trent’s athletes and coaches. "I’m very proud to see these dedicated and talented competitors play an important role to bring taekwondo to the varsity circuit," he said. "We look forward to continue building the sport in the province when the Trent Taekwondo Club attends the Elite Martial Arts Club Challenge at the end of May."
