Adaptation of The Lesson debuts February 2
February 2, 2007
Teatr Korzenie’s adaptation of Eugene Ionesco’s play The Lesson starring Trent students Charles Marlatt, Melissa Gaulin and Briana Blades opens Friday, February 2 at 1:00 p.m. in Nozhem: First Peoples Performance Space. This production, which began development in October, has ranged from sixteen to twenty-four hours of rehearsals a week and has exceeded the already high expectations of everyone involved.
The directors Magdalena and Shawn Kazubowski–Houston have been incredibly impressed with the talent, open minds and determination their relatively fresh actors have brought to this very difficult production.
"It’s been challenging, but so refreshing to work with actors who don’t have professional training… It really makes you revisit your own training," says Magdalena Kazubowski–Houston.
The most surprising part about this performance is how high the calibre of acting is, despite the fact that all of the actors are making their Trent debut.
"It’s been the most challenging and rewarding thing that I’ve done at Trent," says Melissa Gaulin, a third-year Cultural Studies major.
When asked about the very diverse group of students assembled for the production, there was nothing but praises. Alison Austin, the back stage coordinator, said, "This is the most dedicated group of people I have ever seen… they are why I come everyday."
The one word that was used by all to describe their group is "Family" . "It is such a safe and comfortable environment… It’s really quit e amazing," says Ms. Gualin. When speaking of their directing team, Briana Blades, a first-year Cultural Studies major described them as "Complete opposites, but a perfect couple and team … Magda has really pushed me to new heights."
The main thing the actors all share is the realization that this production is something they have never seen at Trent, and they are interested to see its effects on the audience. Overall, they believe that this performance will be a big step forward for the Trent theatre community, and hopefully introduces as well as opens doors to alternative forms of theatre.
