Patterson named to scholarship post

Trent president Bonnie Patterson has been appointed to the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation, an organization created by the Government of Canada in 1998 to improve access to post-secondary education by reducing the amount Canadian students must borrow to pursue their studies.

The foundation, a private, autonomous organization, will award nearly $3 billion in scholarships over the coming decade.

By awarding its scholarships to students in need of financial assistance the foundation enables Canadians to acquire the knowledge and skills demanded by an ever-evolving economy and society.

Close to 900 students were selected from a field of 7,500 applicants to receive scholarships this year. Winners are determined by academic records, capacity for leadership, commitment to the community and demonstrated interest in innovation.

Members of the foundation are selected because of their extensive experience in the field of education and their sensitivity to the priorities of today's students. A 15-person board of directors is accountable to foundation members.
