Trent Report Online

Proud of the Trent learning experience

Over 4,000 friends, family and significant others spilled over the steps of Bata Library on Friday June 1 to watch proudly as Trent students mounted the podium to receive their degrees.

In her remarks to the audience Trent President and Vice-Chancellor Bonnie Patterson described convocation as "the finest day in our academic year." She acknowledged the success of 1,024 students who "earned their degrees or diplomas through hard work and determination" and congratulated those in the audience who shared in their accomplishment.

"We are proud of the Trent learning experience. Our faculty are dedicated scholars and teachers who have chosen a path of life-long learning for themselves, who push the frontiers of new knowledge and innovation. They commit their lives to ensuring students have every opportunity to be successful at their studies."

That success carries on long after graduation. Patterson said Trent students "do extremely well beyond our walls in both the private and public sector," assume leadership roles in organizations and "make significant contributions to the social, cultural and economic advancement of communities within which they live."

Results of last year's alumni survey show that six months after graduation almost 94 per cent of Trent graduates are gainfully employed. Only two years after graduation, that number rises to over 97 per cent. In some fields, graduates from Trent report 100 per cent employment.

"These are remarkable placement rates that clearly demonstrate the relevancy and connectedness of learning in a liberal arts and science environment to careers in the new knowledge economy," Patterson said.

Patterson also paid tribute to the hundreds of staff who worked behind the scenes to prepare for the day's event. She noted the invaluable contribution of Trent staff to the university's ability to provide a supportive environment where students can flourish.
