Trent University Athletics and Recreation Wins Award for Excellence
The Department of Athletics and Recreation at Trent University was recognized this week by the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) for excellence in providing intramural programs to Trent Students.
Coordinator of Campus Recreation, Sue Robinson, received the honour for her work in the design and operation of the multi dimensional program at Trent. CIRA Ontario awards the Outstanding Intramural Award annually to the top program in Ontario (from all universities and colleges). Programs are judged on the following three criteria:
"We have really tried to design programs that would involve as many students as possible. The feedback we have had from our participants has been very positive and we are delighted with this honour," said Robinson. Trent's program offers a diverse range of activities including, competitive and non-competitive leagues and tournaments, as well as skill development clinics (introductory/ advanced levels). Robinson believes "Being involved in Campus Recreation is valuable as students make friendships, relieve the stress of academic studies, improve their fitness and it helps them to develop healthy living patterns."
Over 1,800 students participated in organized activities at Trent this past year. In addition the increase in use of the athletic facilities has dramatically increased with over 1,000 people per day using various facilities during peak periods. Athletic Director, Bill Byrick indicated it is a sample of the quality of work that this department provides to both the students at Trent and to the community. "We are delighted with the award and it is a deserving recognition to Sue and her crew for the great work they do."
Planning is now in its final stages to service the increase in students next September. "We have many new initiatives planned for next year and we are ready to provide dynamic new opportunities for students," Byrick stated.
