Flying High at 40: Trent University dresses up for its 40th anniversary

A stunning display of specially designed 40th Anniversary flags is on parade at Trent University's Symons, Traill and Argyle Street campuses -- just in time for the beginning of classes. Produced as a part of the University's 40th anniversary celebrations, the flags are visual representations the University and each of its academic areas. They will remain in place for the entire anniversary year and beyond. (Click here to view the flags designed for the 40th Anniversary - Flash Player required)

Early in their planning for the anniversary year, the 40th anniversary committee decided a key objective was to enliven the campus with a celebratory feel. When communications director Marilyn Burns proposed a display of flags to welcome students and alumni, faculty, staff and guests to the campus, the idea seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

"The entire committee agreed that our fortieth birthday was the time for a little flag-waving," says committee chair Professor Gordon Johnston. "Our theme is The Spirit of Trent, and we wanted to make that spirit visible."

The flags are a product of Trent's Communications Office. TD Meloche Fellow Joe Teft, whose fellowship focused on the 40th anniversary, researched flag suppliers and worked with many of the departments involved. The 40th anniversary flag was designed by local graphic designer Anne Hoover, while graphic designer Will Knight painstakingly designed beautiful flags for each and every academic department, working over several months to get just the right look and feel to suit each discipline and the campus.

In as many cases as possible, Mr. Knight made use of "local" images. For example, the geography flag features an old map of Peterborough County. Meanwhile, the history flag has an image of Samuel de Champlain superimposed on a historical document from the Trent Archives.
