Toxic substances research initiative

Trent University has been awarded more than $275,000 in grants from Health Canada to conduct toxic substances research.

Joe Muldoon, Coordinator, Research, says: "Trent has done exceedingly well in this new national funding competition through Health Canada, with research that targets toxic substances in a variety of different environments."

Eight projects receiving funding are "Modelling the sustainable use of organic chemicals in a healthy continental environment," Don Mackay; "Multiple stressors - Effects on native amphibian species of forested environments," Michael Berrill; "Whole animal laboratory testing methods for EDCS in fish;" Chris Metcalfe; "EDCS in municipal sewage effluents," Chris Metcalfe; and "Impact of polyboriminated diphenyl ethers on Canadian environment and health of Canadians," Chris Metcalfe.

Also, "Effects of endocrine disruption on fish reproduction," Chris Metcalfe; "Enviromental effects and remediation of contaminants in Sydney Harbour, Nova Scotia," Donald Mackay and "Impact of endocrine disrupting compounds on amphibian health in agricultural ecosystems," Michael Berrill.
