Search begins for new dean

The search is on for a new Dean of Research and Graduate Studies for Trent University to replace Paul Healy, whose term expires June 30.

Vice-President Academic Graham Taylor chairs the search committee, which also includes Don McCaskill (native studies), Jim Parker (psychology), Michael Berrill (biology), Richard Dellamora, (English literature), John Topic (anthropology) and two graduate students, Nick Hamilton and Yolanda MacKinnon.

The committee expects to begin interviewing nominees and applicants over the next few weeks, after which it will make its recommendation to the President.

The Dean of Research and Graduate Studies reports to the Vice-President (Academic) and Provost and is responsible for leadership in the development of policies for research and graduate studies. Other responsibilities include supervision of the staff and management of the budget of the Office of Research and Graduate Studies; internal and external promotion of research activities of Trent faculty; liaison with research groups, centres and institutes; assisting faculty in exploring potential commercial applications of research and development; and management of the budgets of graduate programs.

The incumbent also represents Trent at meetings and conferences and a number of key committees related to research and graduate studies, chairs the Committee on Graduate Studies and serves as secretary to the selection Committee for Distinguished Research Award.

The dean is an ex-officio member of Senate, Faculty Board, President's Executive Group, Vice-President's Advisory Council and the University Committees on Research.
