Internal Research Deadlines

The final dates for applying for 1998-99 research funds is February 19th. Please note that all research applications which involve human subjects require approval from the Research Ethics Committee (REC). Applications which require REC approval should include a completed REC application form.

Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethics in Human Research

Senate has established an "Ad-hoc Decanal Committee" for the purposes of reviewing the new Tri- Council Policy. The Committee will hold an open forum on the issue on Friday January 29th in the A.J.M. Smith Conference Room in the BL from 9:30-11:00 and from 1:30-3:30. The committee will draft a policy document for consideration by Senate in the Spring. All interested individuals are invited to attend. Copies of the document are available by calling Joe Muldoon at Ext. 1496.

SSHRC New Strategic Programs

SSHRC has announced three new Strategic Programs. The first three targeted areas announced will support interdisciplinary research teams working in partnership with policy-makers and other potential users of research: (i) Exploring social cohesion in a globalizing era; (ii) Challenges and opportunities of a knowledge-based economy; and (iii) Society culture and the health of Canadians. The deadline for letters of intent is February 26.

SSHRC New Joint Initiatives

"Valuing Literacy in Canada" This program is funded jointly by SSHRC and HRDC. The first deadline is March 31. "Federalism and Federations".This four year program funded jointly by SSHRC and Intergovernmental Affairs have joined together to support students and researchers through five award mechanisms which include doctoral and postdoctoral fellowship supplements, conference and research grants. There are several deadlines, the first research deadline is June 14.

New SSHRC Program

Community-University Research Alliances (CURA) is a new program based on the CRIC model where universities and communities will carry out "interactive" research. Details of the program will be available at the SSHRC website (http://www.sshrc.ca) on January 15th.

NSERC News

The Canadian Forest Service/NSERC/SSHRC Forest Research Partnership Program is now an open deadline. NSERC International Opportunty Fund. This program helps Canadian researchers to establish collaborative projects with research groups or networks abroad. Proposals may be submitted at any time. The NSERC Strategic Grants deadline is April 9.

Health Canada: Toxic Substances Research Initiative

This program is designed to promote scientific research into the links between toxic substances, environmental damag and human illness. Further information, as well as the application and guidelines are available from the TSRI website at: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/tsri. Deadline: February 26.

c) National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC). Studentship and Fellowship. Deadline: Feb. 1.
d) AUCC Canadian Awards Program, various fellowships. Deadline: Feb. 1.
e) Cancer Research Society. Deadline: Feb. 1.
f) Celanese Fellowships. Opportunities to study abroad, valued at $10,000 (all disciplines). Deadline: March 1.
g) Banting Research Foundation, March 1; h) International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) The C.S. Mott Scholarship (http//www.iaglr.org). Deadline: Feb 28.
i) Environment Canada, Postgraduate Scholarship in Atmospheric Sciences Deadline: Feb. 15.
j) Ministry of Health: Community-based HIV Services Evaluation Unit. Deadline: March 12.
