Protecting world's water

Trent University's Water Quality Centre, designed to help protect dwindling fresh water supplies around the world, was scheduled to open officially April 28. Recognizing the increasing importance of sustainable water use, the wqc aims to develop cost effective, rapid and efficient techniques for evaluating water quality and train young researchers to be innovative and creative.

The centre's sophisticated equipment, valued at more than $2 million, is housed temporarily in the university's Environmental Sciences Building. The advanced technology for researching water quality was purchased thanks to the combined support of several private sector donors, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund and equipment vendors.
