Geography professor Susan Wurtele
wins Symons teaching award

Susan Wurtele will return to Trent's Convocation podium 12 years after her graduation there to receive the Symons Teaching Award. The award recognizes outstanding teaching at Trent and exemplary concern for students.

Following her Trent degree, Wurtele received her PhD from Queen's University in 1993 and joined Trent's faculty in September 1994, subsequent to a year teaching at the University of Connecticut.

Wurtele currently teaches introductory, feminist and urban geography courses. She continues a project started in 1996 with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, tracing Canada's multicultural policy. The study examines and compares how national corporations such as the railways and groups such as the Saskatchewan Arts and Crafts Society promoted immigrant handicrafts as a way to foster a positive attitude towards immigration.
