Two Fencers Named Athletes of the Week for February 20

Trent University is proud to announce that Tamar Walsh is Riley's-Junction female Athlete of the Week. Ms. Walsh was also named the MVP of the OUA Fencing Championships this past weekend, after winning a silver medal in the individual foil competition and a bronze medal in the team competition. To top the week off, Ms. Walsh was also named to the OUA all-star team. Ms. Walsh hails from Coldwater, Ontario and is a fourth year Anthropology student.

On the men's side, Grant Johnstone has the honour of being Riley's-Junction male Athlete of the Week. Mr. Johnstone is a member of the men's fencing team and finished in fifth place in the men's epee at the OUA Fencing Championships this past weekend. Mr. Johnstone hails from Cambridge, Ontario and is a third year Ancient History student.

Trent Playoff Run Ends

Peterborough, ON- The Trent University women's volleyball team hosted the Mohawk Mountaineers in OCAA playoff action, Saturday, February 18th. Trent stormed to an early 12-5 lead in the match before Mohawk stormed back to take the first set 25-17.

In the second set it was much of the same as Mohawk won the set 25-16. In the third set Mohawk took control early and increased their lead by a score of 21-13, before Trent got on a roll and closed the gap to 23-22. Unfortunately Trent could not complete the comeback as Mohawk finished off the set and took the match in three straight ( 25-17, 25-16, 25-22).

Leading the way for Trent was Laura Lynch with 9 points (6 kills, 3 aces). Setter Becki Rodin chipped in with 6 kills. With the loss Trent is eliminated from the OCAA playoffs and finishes the season with an 8-6 record.

Trent Battles Cold at Nordic Ski Championships

The Trent University Nordic ski team travelled to Sudbury, Ontario for the OUA Nordic ski championships this past weekend. With temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius Trent took to the course. On Saturday Trent's Liam Walke finished the 10km course in 44th place with a time of 60:51.1. In the women's 5km classic race Adrienne Mason finished in 32nd (27:04.5), Rachel Herron was 33rd (27:35.2) and Gillian Kunza finished in 48th place (30:44.7).

On Sunday Liam finished the 15km free race in a time of 59:25.4 which was good enough for 42nd place. In the women's 10km free Rachel paced Trent with a 27th place finish (49:23.5), Adrienne was 37th (53:21.6), and Gillian was 44th (57:24.2).

Trent alumni and Peterborough native Stephen Hart, now skiing for Lakehead University, collected three gold medals as he finished in first place in both the 10km classic (37:49.2) and the 15km free (41:52.7) as well as leading the Lakehead relay team to a gold medal. For his efforts Stephen was named the 1st OUA all-star. Lakehead won both the men's and women's overall team titles.

Trent's Walsh Wins Two Medals

The Trent University men's and women's fencing teams travelled to Queen's University this past weekend for the OUA Fencing Championships. Leading the way for Trent was foil specialist Tamar Walsh. Tamar brought home a silver medal in the women's foil, as well as helping the women's foil team to a bronze medal in the team competition. For her efforts Tamar was named to the OUA All-Star team.

Allison Pechlof finished in eighth place in the women's epee. The women's epee team finished in fourth place. "I'm very pleased with our results. Tamar was outstanding she really came ready to compete this weekend and it's great to see her come home with two medals and to be recognized as an all-star,' said Trent Head Coach David French. The Trent women's team finished in fourth place out of nine teams in the final OUA team standings.

In the men's epee competition, Grant Johnstone finished in fifth place while teammates Stephan Donald finished in seventh position, and Tom Fee was twelfth. In the men's foil Cory Chisolm finished in fourteenth place, while Mike Mitnik was fifteenth in the men's sabre.

The team of Johnstone, Donald and Fee finished in fifth place in the men's epee competition. "The men were in tough, they really gave it their all but we drew some tough match-ups along the way. Sometimes the final standings don't represent how well you actually did," said Coach French. The Trent men finished in seventh place in the overall team competition.
