OUA Announces Men's All-Stars

Thomas GibsonHamilton, ON- Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the 2005 Men's Rugby All-Star team as selected by the league's coaches.

Three athletes from Trent University were selected for the team. Thomas Gibson was named to his second consecutive team, while Michael Moores and Jeff McDiarmid were named to their first OUA All-Star team.

"Tom Gibson had another consistent season as Excalibur's team Captain. He led on and off the field showing commitment, intensity and desire in everything he accomplished. Mike Moores was the best all around player on the team. His skills and fearless leadership were an example for all. Jeff McDiarmid stepped in as a rookie and took on a big leadership roll. His rugby knowledge and skills are among the best in the league and he is one of the best additions to this team in years," said Head Coach Darrell Devine.

Trent Athletes Excel

Lauren Chewter Rows to Silver

Lauren ChewterVictoria, BC- One week after winning a gold medal at the OUA Rowing Championships, Trent University's Lauren Chewter rowed to a silver medal in the lightweight single at the Canadian University Rowing Championships on Sunday, November 6. Lauren finished the 2km course in a time of 7:57.48.

"I'm very excited, I qualified for the final in third, and I was confident I could improve on that in the final," said Ms. Chewter.

Marie Laforme finished in seventh place in the women's heavyweight single in a time of 8:37.81. Mark Basterfield and Christian Tuters finished seventh in the men's heavyweight double in a time of 7:12.04. The men's lightweight four finished sixth in a time of 6:44.44, and the women's heavyweight eight finished in sixth place in a time of 7:44.17.
While in Victoria, the following members of the Trent University Rowing team will be attending the identification camp for the World University Rowing team, Mark Basterfield, Lauren Chewter, Marie Laforme, Christian Tuters, Jen Tuters, Sean Whitaker.

Bucknam, Storey-Fleming Named All-Stars

Catherine BucknamLaura Storey-FlemingHamilton, ON- Ontario University Athletics announced the 2005 women's rugby all-star team and award winners as voted by the league's coaches.

Trent University had two players voted onto the all-star team. Catherine Bucknam was named to the team for the third straight year. Joining Catherine is rookie Laura Storey-Fleming, a native of Douro, ON.

"Both Catherine and Laura enjoyed great seasons. Catherine has proven once again that the coaches feel she's one of the top players in the league, and Laura was a key contributor to our team. It was refreshing to see a first year player rewarded for the impact she made in the league," said Assistant Coach Craig Harris.

Trent Earns Silver in Fencing

Ottawa, ON- The Trent University fencing team competed at the Carleton Invitational, Sunday, November 6. First year, Stephanie Coutanceau led the women's epee team to a silver medal in the team competition.

"It was an excellent early season performance for us. Stephanie is from France and is a wonderful talent and a great addition to the team," said Head Coach David French. The men's epee finished in ninth place out of 36 teams, and the women's foil finished in eigth place out of 30.
