Athletes of the Week

Erin AweMatt GardnerTrent University is proud to announce that Erin Awe is the Riley's-Junction female Athlete of the Week for the week of October 17. Erin plays the fly half position for the women's rugby and has been a strong presence on the field all season. Erin hails from Peterborough, Ontario and is a third year anthropology student.

Trent University is proud to announce that Matt Gardner is the Riley's-Junction male Athlete of the Week for the week of October 17. Matt is a member of the men's soccer team and scored his team leading third goal of the season this past weekend. Matt is a native of Whitby, Ontario and is a third year business student.

Habtemichael, Merilainen Lead the Way for Trent

Cross Country RaceThe Trent University cross country team competed at the Queen's Invitational in Kingston, Saturday, October 15. The men's race featured the first 10km race of the season.

Leading the way for Trent once again was Zekarias Habtemichael finishing in 4th place out of 111 runners, with a time of 33:40. Teammate Mike Minor finished 41st (36:09).

"It was a good run, it was the first championship distance run of the season and most of the top runners in the province were here. It's always good to race against the top competition," said Habtemichael.

In the women's 5km race Jutta Merilainen led the way for Trent with a 15th place finish (19:52) in a field of 140 runners. Chantal Gagne finished in 75th place (22:12), Stephanie Mitchell crossed the line in79th (22:25), and Rachel Herron was 81st (22:57).

Trent Volleyball Leaves Ottawa with Two Splits

The Trent University volleyball teams traveled to Ottawa this weekend to open the OCAA regular season.

On Friday night both teams were successful, as the Trent women defeated La Cite College by a score of 3-0. The Trent men also defeated La Cite with a five set (3-2) victory.

In Saturday's action the Trent women lost to Algonquin College by a score of 3-1. The Trent men also came up short against Algonquin with a 3-1 loss.

"It was an encouraging weekend for both our teams. Obviously we would have liked to come home with more than two splits, but it's early and we had a lot of positives we can build on," said Assistant Coach Brian Hayes.

Women's Rugby End Season in Third

The Trent University women's rugby team lost to York University by a score of 10-5, Friday, October 14. Charlotte Kloosterman scored the lone try for the Excalibur. With the loss Trent finishes the season in a third-place tie with York in the OUA Russell Division.

Trent Men's Rugby Host Guelph

The Trent University men's rugby team lost to Guelph University by a score of 14-3, Saturday, October 15. Mike Simmons scored the penalty goal for Trent.

"It wasn't the result we were looking for but we really battled hard and we have one game left," said Head Coach Darrell Devine. Trent will travel to Kitchener to play Wilfrid Laurier, Saturday, October 22.
