TRENT UNIVERSITY SENATE ANNOUNCES PROFESSOR JOAN SANGSTER RECIPIENT OF DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARD

The Senate of Trent University is pleased to announce that Professor Joan Sangster, Director of the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Native Studies, is this year's recipient of the Distinguished Research Award.

The award is presented annually to a member of the Trent faculty, including Professors Emeriti, in recognition of outstanding achievements in research and scholarship.

Professor Sangster, an author of books and articles on labour and women's history, commented that it was an honour and a joy to receive an award for work that she loved so much.

In their nominations, Sangster's nominees praised her commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarly research. A colleague from a prestigious Amercian university noted Professor Sangster's work "…has been published in prestigious American journals; it is read and cited by graduate students everywhere; and Sangster is frequently invited to present her work in U.S. conferences…"

A distinguished administrator and professor from a Canadian university wrote, "Sangster is probably Canada's leading feminist social historian and her work is increasingly receiving much deserved international attention."

The Distinguished Research Award rotates annually among the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The Distinguished Research Award Committee made the recommendation to Senate. The committee is composed of four members of faculty, one student and one administrator.

The Frost Centre is both a research centre and the home for two graduate programs, including the M.A. in Canadian Studies and Native Studies, and jointly sponsored Ph.D. in Canadian Studies with Carleton University.

The award will be presented at the May 31 Convocation.
