Trent Announces Second Annual Literary Short Fiction Writing Contest

Story Submissions Due October 2

In honour of the new Certificate Program in Creative Writing, the Trent University Continuing Education program is holding its second annual Literary Short Fiction Writing Contest.

The winner of the contest will be enrolled at no cost in the "Reading Like a Writer" course with renowned author, Charles Foran; the winner will also gain automatic acceptance into the new Certificate Program in Creative Writing. The winner's story will also be published in the Peterborough Examiner.

All entries will be judged by an exclusive panel consisting of Michelle Berry and Jim Hendry. Ms. Berry is the author of two collections of short stories, How to Get There From Here and Margaret Lives in the Basement, Postcard Fictions. She is also the author of two novels, What We All Want and Blur. Ms. Berry is on the board of PEN Canada and she is also a book reviewer for the Globe and Mail. Her new novel, Blind Crescent, was released in May 2005. Ms. Berry is an Instructor in Trent University's Certificate Program in Creative Writing.  Jim Hendry has worked at the Peterborough Examiner for 24 years. He has been a reporter, columnist, city editor and is now the editorial page editor. Mr. Hendry has won provincial newspaper awards for investigative reporting, feature and humour writing and editorial writing.

No restrictions as to subject matter or aesthetic approach apply. Contest entries must be double-spaced and no more than 1,250 words. The deadline for submitting stories is Monday, October 2, 2006.

Please note that there is an entry fee of $20 per story and $10 for the second entry. No more than two stories will be accepted per author. No entries will be accepted by email or fax.
