FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Intramural Recreation Association Ontario Recognize Trent University for Intramural Excellence

Tuesday, June 6, 2006, Peterborough

For the fourth consecutive year, Trent University's Department of Athletics and Recreation has been awarded the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario's Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award.

"We are very proud of our Campus Rec program at Trent and, in particular, the variety of activities and the involvement of students in a leadership capacity," said Bill Byrick, Trent's Director of Athletics. "This award represents the quality of the student experience at Trent and our commitment to encouraging healthier lifestyles."

CIRA Ontario presents the Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award annually to the top programs at Ontario schools. This year, 49 elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities are being honoured with the award. Trent University is being recognized for offering a variety of activities that promote CIRA Ontario's motto of "fun active participation for all." The intramural program is also being recognized for promoting student leadership and improving the quality of education through physical activity.

"One of the main goals of our Campus Recreation Program is to give Trent students the opportunity to live a healthy and active lifestyle, while working towards their university degree," said Sue Robinson, Campus Recreation Coordinator. "Staying involved in Campus Recreation allows students to relieve stress, make new friends, stay fit, and try out a variety of sports and recreational programs."

At Trent, over 2,000 students participated in intramural activities during the 2005-2006 academic year. Activities ranged from the usual standards like football and soccer to the more unique innertube water polo and innertube ultimate Frisbee.
