(Peterborough) Celebrate the research and performance of Indigenous dance with the Indigenous Contemporary Repertory Dance class to be held at Trent University Thursday, December 1 and Friday, December 2 at NOZHEM: First Peoples Performance Space in Enweying, Gzowski College.
The evening of dance performances, led by visiting professor and guest artist Daystar/Rosalie Jones, is presented by Trent University's Native Studies Department in association with Indigenous Performance Initiatives (IPI).
The class will showcase the knowledge of contemporary dance gained and incorporated with Native American Intertribal dance styles. The evening begins with three student dance creations titled Gathering of Nations, WindSwept, and Buffalo Spirit Tracks.
The evening will conclude with Sacred Woman, Sacred Earth, re-envisioned from the repertoire of the Daystar Dance Company. Sacred Woman, Sacred Earth tells the Lakota story of White Buffalo Calf Pipe Woman in three episodes. This work also addresses the current issues of global warming.
Daystar/Rosalie Jones, former chair of Performing Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an accomplished dancer, choreographer, writer and educator. She is the first Native American to receive a two-year National Endowment of the Arts Choreographer's Fellowship in recognition of 25 years of pioneering the early development of Native Modern Dance in the United States. Ms. Jones developed her innovative teaching methods over the past 30 years of teaching in Native American schools, communities, and colleges throughout the US and Canada. She is also the artistic director and choreographer of her own company, Daystar: Contemporary Dance Drama of Indian America.
