Board Receives Key Performance Indicators

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From the Board of Governors' Meeting - November 26, 2004 - Peterborough

At today's Board of Governors' meeting background information was presented on the University's Key Performance Indicators.

As part of its accountability process the University presents to the board and senate each year a set of numerical measures reflecting the University's statement of mission, goals and institutional objectives.

Highlights:

Tenured faculty teaching first year classes:   An indicator of a high quality educational experience is the number of full-time tenured faculty that taught first year classes. At Trent University, this figure continues to rise. In 2003-04, 238 tenured faculty taught first year classes up from the 2002-03 level of 216, an increase of 10 percent.

Class Sizes 1st and 2nd Year: As the number of first year full-time students increased by 45% from 2003-04 over 2002-03 levels, class sizes of 1 st and 2 nd year students remained relatively unchanged. The University offered a total of 670 classes to first and second year students and this is up by 1 per cent over 2002-03 levels.

Class Size 3rd and 4th Year: Despite an increase of 18% in undergraduate enrolment, approximately 96% of upper year classes at Trent are taught in a group environment of 50 or less students.

Research and Endowment Income:   With excellence in faculty research, Trent has seen its externally funded research (federal, provincial, municipal and private research grants) increase from $3M in 1996-97 to $8.5M in 2003-04. At the same time, the University's endowment fund has more than doubled from $8.7M to $21.6M. Endowments at Trent are used to fund investments in student assistance, library, academic research, colleges, academic departments and programs, and other specific funds.
