Trent University's Archaeology Centre hosts Open House: October 15

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. James Conolly, Canada Research Chair in Archaeology, to present public lecture "More Grist for the Mill: The Origins of Agriculture in the Eastern Mediterranean"

Friday, October 8, 2004, Peterborough

The Trent University Archaeological Research Centre (TUARC) and the Department of Anthropology will host an Open House at the Archaeology Centre on the East Bank of the Symons Campus on October 15 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

As part of the University's 40th Anniversary, an exhibit featuring a history and photographs of the founding department chair, archaeologist Kenneth E. Kidd, will be on display. There will also be a repeating, stand-alone slide show for visitors, focusing on past Trent archaeological fieldwork, featuring photos of current and former Trent archaeologists and students.

At 2 p.m., in the seminar room of the Archaeology Centre, Dr. James Conolly, Canada Research Chair-Archaeology, will be presenting an illustrated talk titled "More Grist for the Mill: The Origins of Agriculture in the Eastern Mediterranean".

All are welcome to attend the open house and the lecture. There is no charge for admission.

Professor Conolly, who comes to Trent from University College London, UK, is the author of numerous major works, a participant in the Catalhoyuk Research Project in Turkey, an external reviewer for the Council for British Research, as well as a GIS/IT consultant for the British School at Athens and the British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara.

His research involves examining and making a geo-spatial analysis of the colonization, settlement, and spread of early farming communities in the Aegean Islands. The research contributes to the cultural-historical context of Mediterranean pre-history and to the human social sciences.
